Pinguicula 'Johanna'

Mexican butterwort cultivar / Cultivated hybrid of Mexican species

A butterwort cultivar selected from a cross of Pinguicula agnata and Pinguicula debbertiana, described by Christian Weinberger in 2010. Its rounded leaves can blush orange-red in bright light, and its flowers are pale purple. Sticky summer leaves catch small insects; the winter rosette is smaller and more compact.

Supplied by the grower as Pinguicula 'Johanna'. The original collection photograph has a strong pink lighting cast, so natural leaf color may look different in daylight.

Care level
Intermediate
Light
Bright, filtered light or a grow light
Water
Low-mineral water; moist during carnivorous growth, drier in succulent growth
Season
Watch for a compact winter rosette and reduce moisture as succulent leaves form.

Instructions that travel with the plant.

  1. Give bright light near a window or under a grow light. Increase light gradually to encourage color while protecting the leaves from harsh afternoon sun and heat.
  2. Use a loose Mexican butterwort mix with mineral ingredients such as perlite, pumice, and sand, in a pot with drainage. Avoid ordinary fertilized potting soil.
  3. Water with distilled, rain, or reverse-osmosis water. Keep the mix lightly moist while the plant produces sticky carnivorous leaves, with good drainage around the crown.
  4. Keep frost-free, ideally around 55-85 F (13-29 C), and provide gentle air movement, especially in humid growing spaces.
  5. As smaller, tighter succulent leaves replace the sticky leaves, reduce watering and let the mix become drier between light waterings. Resume more regular moisture when carnivorous growth returns; follow the leaves rather than a fixed calendar.
